July 2011 Field Trip

Yanks Air Museum

Our next trip will be on July 15.  We have arranged for a bus to take us to Yanks Air Museum (search); the “other” museum at Chino Airport.

Although less well known than nearby Planes of Fame, Yanks has a diverse collection of about 160 historic American built aircraft, many of which are airworthy.  We have made sure that we’ll have an opportunity to also visit Flo’s famous restaurant close by the museum.

Our bus will depart the Sycamore Center in Lakewood parking lot at 09:30am on Friday, July 15, and will return by 1600 (4:00pm).  The cost is $20 per person.  Because of bus capacity, we are limited to 50 members and guests on this trip.  In order to reserve your seats, please call Jerry Callaghan at (562) 691-4527 or send him an email to jtcjmc@adelphia.net.

Please make your reservations by no later than June 12th, and mail your check by July 8th.  Jerry will track the reservations and collect the fee.  See your RoundUp newsletter for his mailing address, or call him.

 See you there!

April 2011 Field Trip

William Lyon Air Museum
Orange County Airport (John Wayne Airport)

On April 15, we plan to gather at the Lyon Air Museum (search) located on the west side of John Wayne Airport.  This is a relatively small museum; nevertheless, it houses a B-17 Flying Fortress, a B-26 Marauder, a DC-3, and a C-47. all in airworthy condition, and all products of the Douglas Long Beach factory (Yes, Douglas also made B-17's).  General Lyon's B-25 Mitchell is also on display.

Several of the museum docents are DAC, MDC, or Boeing alumni and will lead our group on our tour that day.

Since this trip is local to the greater Los Angeles area, we will NOT provide bus transportation to the museum.  Also, we will not collect admission fees ($6.00 for seniors) which you can pay as you enter the facility.  We plan to meet at the museum when it opens at 10:00am, April 15 Friday morning.

Location - From the 405 Freeway, exit Bristol South to Baker (about 3 blocks), and turn left onto Baker.  Continue driving east on Baker to its end.  Crossing Airway Avenue, Baker becomes Ike Jones Road, which jogs around "Road Closed" signs.   Follow Ike Jones Road to the end to arrive at Lyon Air Museum.

Please sign up for this museum trip at the March 01 Luncheon meeting so we have a head-count expectation.

USS MIDWAY Museum  (May 06, 2008)

We’re planning a field trip to San Diego (search) on May 6 to visit the USS Midway museum (search) , a chance to see many airplanes on the flight and hangar decks as well as the inner workings of this historic vessel.  Midway (search) was the most sophisticated and powerful ship in the world at the time of its launching in 1945.  With a crew of more than 4,500, the ship remained in commission for 47 years and served in Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1991.

Our bus will depart Sycamore Center (search) at 9:00 am, return approximately 5:00 pm.  We have not yet determined the details of allocating the bus expense but we will advise our participants of any cost changes before we put together our final list. Admission to the ship and museum is $10. Lunch is available aboard the ship or you may bring your own meal.  Please call (714) 538-9258 if you want to join us.

Post-trip Story -  Midway Field Trip

Fifty five of our members and guests boarded a bus at Sycamore Center on the morning of  May 6th, and traveled to San Diego to visit the Midway Museum.  The ship, commissioned in 1945, was retired from fleet service in 1992, following its participation in Operation Desert Storm (search). In 2004 Midway was opened as a tourist attraction along the waterfront near the Star of India (search) and the cruise ship docks.

The tour of the ship begins on the hangar deck and continues through various spaces on four other decks including crew quarters, admiral’s and captain’s accommodations, command and control center, and the island with its bridge and facilities for the air operations.  The tour continues on the four-acre flight deck.  Many aircraft are on display.  On the hangar deck there is an SBD Dauntless and an  A-1 Skyraider.  Topside, there is an A-3 SkywarriorA-4 SkyhawkF/A-18 Hornet, two F-4 Phantoms, and a Boeing H-46 Sea Knight plus 16 aircraft from other manufacturers.

The return bus trip arrived at 5:00 pm at the Center.  We all have Jill Schaufele to thank for organizing this interesting day.
