Odds and Ends

I judge that the move to our new luncheon location, the Rose Center in the Westminster Civic Center, went reasonably well for a first time run.  The current parking is a little bit more inconvenient that our former location at the Lakewood Sycamore Center, but the Rose Center staff did a very good job having the front parking lot blocked off for our use, and an attendant directing the parking.  The parking should improve with the completion of a parking structure directly across from the Rose Center planned for year 2012.  All in all, the Rose Center staff and caterers did an outstanding job and were very helpful.

Our speaker for the March luncheon, Long Beach councilwoman, Gerry Schipske, I found to be quite interesting and informative on the subject of early Long Beach aviation.  She has written several books relative to Long Beach aviation history and Rosie the Riveter.  As I am sure the luncheon attendees noticed, we had a little problem getting her setup with the audio-visual equipment.  We will work to make sure we have plenty of pre-setup time in future meetings.

April 15th was the day for our Association’s tour at the Lyon Air Museum at John Wayne Airport.  Due to my traveling, I was not able to attend, but I understand about 15 members arrived to be hosted by our own Roger Schaufele, who is a docent at this museum.  If you have not been to the museum it is well worth the trip.  Relatively small – six aircraft, four of which were built at the Douglas Long Beach plant.  They also have additional exhibits that are focused on World War II, which is the emphasis of the museum.  The aircraft are in super outstanding and flyable condition.

Our next outing will be a visit to the Yanks Air Museum, located at the Chino Airport.  The Yanks is focused on American aviation history and technology.  There are about 90 or so aircraft on display – some in the hangar, as well as a number outside.  The restoration shop, where several aircraft are presently being worked, will also be able to be reviewed.  See more information inside this version of the “RoundUp” for details on timing, trip cost, and sign-ups.
