Another Tribute to the Douglas Heritage

Now that we have the holidays behind us - at least for the next 10 months or so - then we start all over again... meantime, I am sure 2012 will have many opportunities for us to take on.  I would bet that many of you have a list of New Year's resolutions so lets see if you can accomplish at least half of them - that will be a first for me.

A lot of progress is being made at the original Long Beach Douglas, McDonnell Douglas plant, now known as Douglas Park.  One thing that has impressed me is The Boeing Company's desire to commemorate the legacy of the many thousands of Long Beach employees and the products they produced.  When the project got started in 2005, Boeing decided they wanted to recognize what was accomplished at that plant through works of public art.

The pieces of art are now coming alive.  If you have not had the opportunity to see what has been done you take the time and do so.  So far there are three major pieces completed.  The first is Douglas Plaza at the corner of Lakewood and Carson.  This little park commemorates the life of Donald W. Douglas. Centerpiece is a statue of Mr. Douglas and his dog Bar.  The pose was taken from a famous photograph of Mr. Douglas with his hand on a propeller blade of a DC-6, and alongside of him, his dog Bar.

The second piece is a globe mounted high up on a pedestal with three World Cruisers circling the globe.  This is a reproduction of the original piece that was mounted above the main entrance to the plant at 3855 Lakewood Blvd.  This public art is located in the middle of the roundabout at the center of the Douglas Park development.

The third item is a representation of three DC-8 vertical stabilizers (the tail fin) located on each side of the southern gateway into Douglas Park.

All three of these pieces of art are easily accessed and open to the public.  Additional artwork is underway and I will report on these as they begin to take shape.

I am looking forward to our March Luncheon speaker, Pres Henne.  Pres spent the early part of his career at the Long Beach plant as an engineer in the Aerodynamics Group and later having a leadership role in the design and development of the MD-90.  He moved to Gulfstream where he is a senior executive and has been nominated this year for an Aviation Week Laureate Award.

Look forward to seeing many of you and catching up at our March Luncheon.
